Hope you’re having a great day! Here’s today’s Quranic verse for you:

“My mercy encompasses all things” [Quran 7:156]

When all hope seems lost, when injustice and evil prevails, remember this beautiful verse on Allah’s Mercy. Allah is the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful, and he Sees things we might not be able to see with our naked eyes and limited use of intellectual faculty. In other words, we might not know the wisdom or hikmah behind all the things that have happened to us, so this verse will reassure us that whatever happens is the Divine Decree of Allah the Most Merciful.

The Lamp Niche for the Best Traditions: Miskat ul-Anwaar Fi Ghurar il-Akhbar

The Lamp Niche for the Best Traditions: Miskat ul-Anwaar Fi Ghurar il-Akhbar, In the realm of literature there exist numerous books and texts that offer deep understandings of the beliefs and traditions associated with the faith. One invaluable example is “The Lamp Niche, for the Best Traditions,” which’s a translation of the renowned book “Mishkat ul-Anwar Fi Ghurar il Akhbar.”

The Legacy of Hassan Tabarsi:

Hassan Tabarsi, not to be confused with his esteemed father, Abu Ali Fazl Tabarsi, the renowned author of the comprehensive Quranic commentary called Majma ul-Bayan, was a respected Shia scholar and theologian in the 12th century.

His father, Abu Ali Fazl Tabarsi, was also a prominent figure in Shia scholarship, known for his valuable contributions to theology. Among his works, Majma ul-Bayan stands out as the most significant, earning him widespread acclaim in the scholarly community.

Interestingly, the story behind Majma ul-Bayan’s completion adds depth to its significance. Initially, Hassan Tabarsi’s father initiated the project as a complementary work to his earlier Makarim ul-Akhlaq. He diligently gathered a wealth of traditions but unfortunately couldn’t complete it within his lifetime. Subsequently, a group of enthusiastic individuals approached Hassan Tabarsi to carry on his father’s legacy and finish the work. Hassan Tabarsi accepted this responsibility and named his version “Mishkat ul-Anwar Fi Ghurar il-Akhbar.”

The contents of “Mishkat ul-Anwar” draw heavily from various sources, primarily from “Al-Mahasin” by Abi Jafar Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid al-Barqi. It appears that the author had access to an authentic copy of this book, although it’s no longer available in the same form today. Additional important references include “Rauzat al-Vaezeen” by Muhammad ibn al-Hassan ibn Ali al-Fatal al-Neyshabori, “Uyun Akhbar Al-Reza” by Abi Jafar Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Hussein ibn Baboyeh al-Qumi (known as Shaykh al-Sadoogh), and “Majma ul-Bayan fi Tafsir al-Quran” by Abi Ali al-Fazl ibn al-Hassan al-Tabarsi.

In essence, the completion of Majma ul-Bayan through “Mishkat ul-Anwar” showcases the dedication of both father and son to the scholarly pursuit of understanding Islam’s core teachings, drawing from a wealth of trusted sources and traditions.

Translators’ Preface of the book:

In the Name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful,

We begin with gratitude to the Almighty for giving us the opportunity to take on this meaningful task.

Understanding Islamic teachings often relies on having reliable documents written in simple language. After the Holy Quran, which is the central scripture for Muslims, we turn to traditions—shortly put, the sayings of the Prophet of God (may God bless him and his household) and the Immaculate Imams (May God Bless). These traditions are vital references for Muslims. They help us comprehend many Quranic verses and Islamic concepts better.

The book “The Lamp Niche for the Best Traditions” is an English translation of “Mishkat ul-Anwar Fi Ghurar il-Akhbar,” originally penned by Hassan Tabarsi in the 12th century A.D. This book is a treasure trove of authentic traditions, drawn from various trusted sources. It’s neatly organized into chapters and sections.

Our work is based on a recent publication of this book by Dar ul-Seqlayn Publishers in Qum, Iran. Mr. Abdullah Muhammadi and Mr. Mehdi Hooshmand translated it from Arabic to Farsi. In their version, they meticulously included references and notes, catering to researchers and those seeking in-depth knowledge.

Our mission, however, is different. We aim to provide everyday English-speaking readers with access to these traditions. Therefore, we’ve omitted most of the detailed notes and references, except for those pertaining to the Holy Quran, which we’ve precisely cited using an available English translation by Mr. Abdullah Yusuf Ali (May God Reward Him). Nonetheless, we’ve included a list of the main references at the end of the book, revealing the wealth of highly authentic sources used by the original author.
