Imam Ja’far Sadiq & Mystery Behind The Wind Origination
When Imam Sadiq (a) was asked about the origin of the wind, he offered a profound and insightful response. He said, “It is captivated under this Al-Shamy corner. If Allah intends so he releases it, whether it is the South wind or the North wind, the Saba wind, or the Dabour wind.” Imam then further elaborated, “A sign of this is that you will never stop seeing this corner moving through the winter and summer or the day and the night.”

Imam (a) described wind as a phenomena of the constant movement of air in our atmosphere. The primary force behind the winds is the Sun, which heats different parts of the Earth, creating pressure differences. These pressure differences drives the movements of air masses, which we experience as winds. Over time, this movement forms patterns, shaping global wind systems that we now understand in meteorological science¹.
- Meteorological science is the study of weather and the atmosphere. It helps us understand things like rain, wind, storms and temperature.)
The Imam’s mention of specific winds like South, North, Saba & Dabour holds deep significance. The South wind is associated with the Khamsin, which is a hot and dry wind that originates in the Sahara desert & moves toward Mediterranean². The North wind which is famously known as the Boreas in classical terms it is a very cold and dry wind that blows from the polar regions³ towards Equator (towards the center area of the earth).
- It is the region around sea which lies between Europe, Asia, and Africa.
3. Polar regions are the very cold areas at the top & bottom of the Earth.)
Imam (a) also mentioned the Saba wind in the hadith, which is usually referred to in historical texts that it originates or comes from the south direction possibly from the Arabian Peninsula or Yemen. The Dabour wind which is also described as a cold and harsh wind, is typically associated with the desert regions and with the blows from the north or the northwest, often bringing several dramatic shifts⁴ in temperature where it travels.
- Dramatic shifts are the sudden and the significant changes that can completely change a situation or completly change the conditions.)
Imam Sadiq (a) also mentioned that the wind’s origin is from a corner that is “always moving,” and that we will not see it stoll anytime, reflecting wind’s continuous motion. This aligns with the today’s scientific understandings, as atmospheric circulation, driven by the Sun’s heat and Earth’s rotations, creates ever-moving air groups. The Coriolis effect⁵ further deflects these air masses, forming predictable yet shifting wind patterns.
- The Coriolis effect is the way Earth’s rotation makes the winds & the water move in curved paths instead of moving in straight lines.)
Today, meteorologists like to use satellites and advanced weather tools to track the movement of these winds, confirming what Imam Sadiq (a) described centuries ago. These winds that were named by the Imam matches with the regional & the global wind systems⁶ we now study in detail. Connection b/w Imam’s description and modern meteorology highlights divine knowledge and its alignment with the scientific understandings.
- Global wind systems are patterns of the wind that move across the planet Earth, created by the sun’s heat and the planet’s rotations.)
Imam Sadiq & The Origin Of Earthquakes
“Imam Sadiq (a) said: ‘The whale carrying the earth once thought that strength which holds earth is its own strength. To remind it, Allah sent a small fish which entered its gills, which caused it distress for forty days. When Allah intended mercy, He removed it. Now, when Allah wills an earthquake, He sends the small fish to visit the whale which makes the whale, uncomfortable, thus shaking the earth.”
📚 Al-Kāfi – Volume 8
Imam Sadiq (a) beautifully explains to us the delicate balance of our planet. Just like the whale, which represents the Earth’s mantle, modern discoveries tells us that the stability of earth is maintained through a very complex system of the tectonic plates. These plates constantly exert pressure against the other plates, and when the stress builds up, then it is released in the form of earthquakes.
The concept of the whale carrying the earth aligns with modern scientific understanding of the tectonic plates that carry over them the Earth’s crust as it floats over the molten layer of the Earth’s mantle. Similarly, the small fish mentioned in the Hadith explains us that even the minor disturbances can trigger massive geological events like earthquake & tsunami which we are experiencing in the recent years.
This idea can be easily explained through the butterfly effect, which explains that the small changes in one part of a system can lead to major effects elsewhere. Just as the small fish caused the whale to react, as minor shifts in tectonic plates can lead to large earthquakes. This is also very similar to the principles of the chaos theory, which suggests that the small factors can greatly influence larger systems.
The whale’s reaction when the small fish goes on to enter its gills explains us how layers of the tectonic plates builds up over time until it is finally released in the form of earthquakes. Just as the whale represents flexibility, so does the earth’s crust, which releases the energy in controlled manner. Earthquakes are released to prevent major failures which science has recently understood in-depth as seismology.
Modern science has shown that ecosystems & planetary systems are deeply interconnected; every single component, no matter how small, contributes to universe & has its role within the other major things aswell. This connection between small & large things reflects complex design, where the small fish represents forces that are small but still holds such a great role, which reflects Allah’s wisdom in his creation !
